Frequently Asked Questions About Philadelphia Church Weddings
What is the best time to schedule a church wedding ceremony in Philadelphia?
The ideal ceremony time depends largely on the season and whether you’re planning a first look.
One of the most common timeline mistakes I see is scheduling a late afternoon ceremony during the fall or winter months. From November through February, daylight fades quickly, and if you’re waiting to see each other until the ceremony, you may have very little natural light left for portraits afterward. During those months, I generally recommend beginning your ceremony no later than 2:00 p.m. whenever possible. This gives us enough daylight for family photos, wedding party portraits, and time together as a couple before the sun sets.
For spring and summer weddings, you have much more flexibility. In fact, I often recommend avoiding ceremonies that are too early in the afternoon, since portraits immediately afterward can fall during the harshest midday sunlight. A slightly later ceremony often creates softer, more flattering light for your portraits while still leaving plenty of time before sunset.

Many Philadelphia churches don’t allow flash photography during the ceremony. Will that affect our photos?
Most churches throughout Philadelphia ask photographers to refrain from using any external lighting during the ceremony, and I completely respect those guidelines. The good news is that modern professional cameras and lenses have come a long way. We use high-end equipment designed to perform exceptionally well in low-light environments, allowing us to capture beautiful, natural images even in darker churches.
Our approach is always to work quietly and unobtrusively, documenting your ceremony as it unfolds without distracting you, your guests, or the officiant. Even in spaces with very little natural light, you can expect your photographs to feel clean, timeless, and true to the atmosphere of your ceremony without compromising on quality.
Should we do a first look before our church ceremony?
There’s no right or wrong answer—it simply depends on the kind of wedding day experience you want.
If you’d like to spend more time with your guests during cocktail hour and enjoy a more relaxed timeline, a first look is often a wonderful option. It allows us to complete most of your portraits before the ceremony while giving you a quiet moment together before the excitement of the day begins.
If you prefer the tradition of seeing each other for the first time as you walk down the aisle, that’s equally meaningful. We’ll simply build your timeline to allow enough time for family photos and portraits after the ceremony while making the most of the available daylight.
Where should we take wedding portraits after our church ceremony?
One of the best things about getting married in Philadelphia is how many beautiful portrait locations are just minutes from many of the city’s churches. Depending on your ceremony location and reception venue, we may recommend places like City Hall, the Rodin Museum, Merchants’ Exchange, the 18th Century Garden, Rittenhouse Square, or Fairmount Water Works.
